Why models/simulated patients are needed?
The courses allow physicians, medical learners and allied health professionals in our communities to learn how to use an ultrasound machine to look for life-threatening conditions and increase safety during emergency procedures. As one of the models, you will allow them to see examples of standard images so they can recognize what a concerning scan looks like more quickly. These courses help to improve the quality of care that communities receive.
What to expect at the course and what to wear
Models/simulated patients are needed for approximately 4 hours per session.
Please wear comfortable clothes and a sports bra/bikini top/crop top if available. While you are with us, the course participants will put an ultrasound probe on your abdomen (just under the rib cage to the pelvic bone) and the top of your chest (at a level above a sports bra). This will not hurt, and it is not dangerous. All ultrasounds are done externally. It can get a little messy as we have to use a water-soluble gel to make contact between the probe and your skin. Towels are provided to protect your clothes and cover you appropriately, but we suggest removing your shirt during the sessions.
At certain courses, the course participants will put an ultrasound probe on your abdomen, chest, neck, eyelid, arm, groin, and leg. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring short, loose gym shorts with you and wear bikini-type underwear if possible. Models will be informed when applicable.
There is a possibility of some downtime during your session depending on that day’s schedule, so you should bring a book or other entertainment. You MUST be present in the room designated for models.
Please note that the ultrasounds at the course are looking for specific conditions, and do not replace an ultrasound done in a radiology department. In the unlikely event that we see any findings suggestive of the conditions we are screening for, we will inform you privately and provide follow-up direction as appropriate.
How to Register
To register for a course or be added to our mailing list, please send your first and last name, email address, age and phone number to models@prairiepocus.ca. Your age is needed to log the scans for the course participant’s certification. Please note that models/simulated patients may have certain requirements (i.e. uterus, gallbladder, etc.) depending on the types of scans being taught.
